was listening on the NPR tonite to an englishwoman describe how utterly and completely the british police shut down any hint of an investigation into the 14 or so russian expat putin critics that putin apparently had murdered in england

uk and the us are too completely entangled with putin to make any trouble for him, it seems

i’m really deeply shocked to hear how totally committed the british government is to covering up putin’s crimes

Thanks for all the positive energy sent my way.

I have no idea why I find this pic of my mother so compelling. I want to know all about her life back then, for a have come to realize that her existence did not start with my birth. The photo does not fill in the gaps.

I am reminded of the quote from Diane Arbus : “A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.”

Whatever the case, of the hundreds of photos I and my brothers have looked through the past two days, this is the one I keep coming back to.

Once again thanks for the support.

Got CL’d downstairs regarding this Tweet:

to which my response was “Wait….is Trump inadvertently admitting he had a heart attack? Granted, most likely a very mild heart attack?”

Seriously….Trump’s making light of the matter, but perhaps in his jest, he accidentally let the truth slip out.

Y’know, it’s been awhile since I sat down and watched that movie all the way through, but I was pretty sure that the moral of story is that blind adherence to unchecked authority can get men injured or killed, and that it’s the duty of a Soldier/Marine/Airman/Sailor to question and disobey orders if they feel that are in error or illegal.

But apparently I was wrong and the actual moral was that all orders are to be obeyed without question, that corporal punishment is the proper means of dealing with “substandard” men, and that if those men are injured or killed then those given the orders are supposed to take the fall while their superiors engage in a cover-up to ensure that their careers are not in any way tarnished.

Oh wait, I forgot, this is the same crowd that thinks the villain of My Lai was Hugh Thompson for threatening to shoot Calley and his men in defense of Vietnamese civilians and idolize Ollie North for taking the fall in Iran-Contra.

But what are the White House staff (and more generally, the GOP) gonna do when/if Trump has “the big one”?

There’s a growing chorus of people in Prague - and elsewhere - calling for services like Airbnb to be outlawed in the Czech Republic. This is why…

At the moment, every fourth apartment in Prague’s historical district of Staré město is rented via Airbnb or some other shared accommodation platform, which leads to the depopulation of the city centre.

Given the current trend, shared accommodation services are likely to push out citizens also from the wider centre of Prague in the near future, concludes the study by Deloitte.

radio.cz

Combined with skyrocketing rents and housing prices in Prague and the simple market dictates of demand far outstripping supply (it takes about 10 years to get a residential apartment building constructed here) and pretty soon, Prague will still be a lovely Czech jewel…..but Czechs unable to afford to live there.

Fortunately, at least for me, rental and housing prices in my region (Moravian Silesia) are on a gradual long-term decline as the region depopulates over the next 25 years or so (population in the Moravian Silesia region is expected to decline by 30 to 35% over the coming quarter century).

I recall the City of Frankfurt cracking down on it because of zoning: Residential properties are not supposed to be reconverted to hotel/motel properties without zoning authority.

They are okay with owners/renters to subletting their flats for a few weeks a year while they are away on vacation, but not with people buying properties for the sole purpose of converting them into full-time Airbnb rentals.

That’s exactly what’s been happening in the historic center of Prague and now it’s spreading to areas outside the historical city center. It’s creating a housing nightmare for would-be Prague residents.

That’s not good. Maybe the one good thing about Ostrava is that no one wants to come here, LOL. The regional government has tried for the better part of this decade to attract tourists to Ostrava, all to no avail.

The only significant segment of tourists I see here are elderly Germans, quite a few of whom are former Sudetenlanders coming back to see the old home town/region before they shuffle off this mortal coil.

The Sudeten Germans I’ve encountered here are quite elderly, and when I’ve talked to them, they’ve all told me they were children when they and their families were expelled.

And the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans is still a sore point in this little part of the world. No one’s going to go to war over it, obviously, but it’s still an issue, albeit a pretty minor one.

One of the major sticking points in negotiating German reunification was to ensure that they would never, ever be in a position to make recompensation claims for property or territories lost after 1945.

One of the major sticking points in negotiating German reunification was to ensure that they would never, ever be in a position to make recompensation claims for property or territories lost after 1945.

Interestingly, a few months back, a Czech court did in fact restore the property of a former Sudeten German (a small castle)…despite the fact that the German in question was a member of Heinlein’s Sudeten German Party.

The case is being appealed to the Czech Constitutional Court, and I’ve heard concern that if the Constitutional Court upholds the lower court verdict, that pretty means the Beneš Decrees are basically null and void. And of course, their fear is that such a Constitutional Court ruling would open the floodgates to all manner of claims from the descendants of the Sudeten Germans.

South Korea has turned away from us and aligned militarily with China.

Our alliances are falling apart. This is what happens when presidents don’t know what they are doing.

And now we have another punk who wanted to shoot up another black church…

washingtonpost.com

Police in northern Georgia said Tuesday that they arrested a white teenager who was plotting to kill parishioners at a mostly black church, thwarting an alleged racist attack that highlighted a growing threat of hate-fueled violence against houses of worship.

The 16-year-old girl was charged with attempt to commit murder after students at her high school told administrators she had a notebook filled with “detailed plans” to kill members of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Gainesville, Ga., according to police.

The alleged plot was “definitely racially motivated,” said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook of the Gainesville Police Department. The notebook, he said, contained “manifesto-type” language that discussed how she wanted to assault black parishioners with butcher knives and other sharp-edged weapons.

Such a fine outstanding CRAPer who wanted to implement Steven Miller’s Final Solution…

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Today Sondland testifies and he’s directly implicated in all the Trumpworld crimes re: Ukraine. How will he respond?

My guess? He is the first to take the 5A.

His actions directly implicate him and Trump in federal felonies and misconduct. He knows or should know what that means, and he also has to know that Trump wont defend his corrupt and sorry ass. Trump cares only about Trump.

Sondland paid $1 million to become ambassador, and all he got was a criminal conspiracy and indictments heading his way.

The GOP will abandon all pretense of being supporters of the Constitution and the rule of law, and will continue to defend Trump despite evidence beyond a reasonable doubt of criminal acts by Trump, Pompeo, Pence, and others. They are beyond repair, and these hearings continue to show that not a single GOPer puts the nation above party.

53
